Question: How much 1.8T performance is available WITHOUT a chip?
...using items like K&N air intakes, freeing up the restrictions around the stock K03 (downpipe, etc.), opening the exhaust up (a la atomixquattro).
If it's possible to pick up an additional 20-25 hp in this manner, would a chip that serves to shorten engine life be worth it (at anything under a Stage 3-type kit)?
Just wondering out loud while observing the 2002 chip wars.

no way on the 20+ HP frm just that
Air intake? Nadda
Air filter? Nadda
2.5" or larger exhaust (including downpipe)? ~10-15 HP. Those #'s are based on AFTER you get a chip though. On a stock car, I'd figure ~10 HP max increase.
Chip adds instantly 40 HP roughly. There is no better bang for buck upgrade.

Just a little FYI
now this info isn't for a A4 but for a GTI 1.8T
with a EVO intake on his GTI my friend picked up .2 and 2mph in the quarter which easily amounts to 10hp.
in the A4 system the most attention should be paid to the Cat-downpipe area as it looks like the rest has oodles of flow ... reviously Cat/downpipes have added as much as 10-15hp peak and more along the lines of 20-25hp around the top end
But these gains were on cars that already were modded (i.e. chip, exhaust etc etc)
I'd say lowballing 10-20hp isn't impossible but I wonder how will the car react?
