I need racks to transport a 14 ft. canoe, skis, and maybe the cargo carrier one day. I'm leaning towards the Thule, but do the cross-bars extend past the roofline? Also, does Thule now have a fairing for the Avant that does not sit behind the sunroof? The Audi OEM seem to fit perfectly, but is more expensive, and have less attachments.

fit how you want them to. yes they will hang out beyond the car but cut them to fit, thats what I did with my yakima rack on my a4.

but I'm also using the Yakima rack and the bars stick out just a bit on each side. It doesn't look too bad. The roofline of the Avant is so short that its a bit of a pain to load longer stuff up there because it will interfere with opening the hatch. You can only move your carrier bars so far apart. I can never open my hatch all the way when I have my snowboards up there. So I would imagine if you have your carrier box up there, you might have the same problem.

i have thule on my avant, and i can't recommend it enough. the cross bars extend past the roofline about 3-5 inches on either side, which i think looks fine (in fact it puts out quite an agressive look). but the best thing about the thule rack, and i can't speak to this quality on the other racks, is the ease of installation and removal. one person can have the entire rack off in under 3 minutes, easy. i remember how much of a pain in the *** it was in my old sedan putting that thing on and off, the roof rails make it so easy!
