Default His brother used to live in London and would bring him some good bottles

I'm not well-versed yet either, but the Double Wood sounds delicious. I like a nice, strong all-around flavor, so I imagine the watery scotches would take a back-seat on my list too. Thanks for the suggestions!

Default technically, a whiskey is a bourbon if...

at least 51 percent of the grain used in making the whiskey is corn (most distillers use 65 to 75 percent corn). Bourbon must be aged for a minimum of two years in new, white oak barrels that have been charred. Nothing can be added at bottling to enhance flavor, add sweetness or alter color.

Default Talking of Single Malt

There are loads. You should try Oban. That's my personal favourite - Glanmorangie is the most popular in Scotland but has a "peaty" flavour.

Also Cardhu if you can get it is very good.

The thing with Single Malts is that they vary a great deal depending on the water supply to the distillery - so they all have their individual characteristics - McCallan is good - but it's not better or worse than any other proper single malt - it's just a question of taste - e.g Some people love Lagavullin, but it has a strong almost menthol flavour so if you like McCallan you probably wouldn;t like it.

Worth getting the small sampler bottles to try a wide variety.

Cheers.
