Default Rear brake pad / caliper question

& forgive me if the answer is in the STFA but I couldn't find it...

So I tried replacing the read brake pads tonight - problem is I don't appear to be able to push the caliper piston back in far enough to get the new pads in.

Am I doing something wrong - is there a special tool - or do I just go out and buy a big G clamp? Thanks

Default There is a way around it--meaning you don't HAVE to buy the special tool.

The point is you have to compress the piston while turning it clockwise. A clamp on the piston while turning the piston with some water pump pliers worked great for me.

Default I have the tool and it makes it much easier and a quick job. You can use>

it to compress the fronts also. (without rotating of course)

Default If you do a proper pad change, you won't need the tool...

By proper pad change, I mean loosening the bleeder screw on the caliper before compressing the piston back. Rotate with a little pressure and the piston compresses VERY easily. For some reason, nobody compresses the piston in this manner. Most prefer to push the fluid against the seals in the master cylinder and deal with the added pressure. Hence, the tool...

Default You don't even have to go through all that. Just put the spindle of the C-clamp on the piston..

When you compress the piston, it will spin with the spindle of the C-clamp. I've been doing it for years. Sounds complicated but it's pretty easy.
