using the rear seat locking button while I was fueling the car (he's 3). Of course, I had left the keys in the ignition not remembering that the damn button was back there and within his reach. After about 5 minutes of cajoling, I finally got him to wriggle out of the car seat and open the door. Sheeesh.
Of course, soon enough he'll probably be driving away with the car.

That should help with the lock out incidents too.
Honestly, I don't have children, but when there is a pet or child in the car, and I need to get out for ANY reason, I roll a window down and take the keys with me. That almost eliminates the possibility of a bad situation. Consider doing the same from now on.

I know this child's capabilities very well (still learning the A4's capabilities, however), and he is unable to get out of his carseat without significant effort (as was again confirmed as I tried to coax him out). When I gas up, I always pay at the pump, and the child is never out of my sight. So, if the kid has a mind to get out of the seat, I'm on him immediately.
The X factor was the lock button on the middle console.
