While in (Eastern) Europe this past Christmas, I saw the new Avant in silver. It was a quick encounter, but I have to say it looks to my eye much better than the sedan. With the older models, I thought they both looked good with a slight edge to the Avant, but with this new generation the difference is even more noticeable.

Of course, this is just my opinion, so no need to fuss over it. But my advice to those who wait for the Avant is: wait, you will not be dissapointed.

Will you be buying an '02 A4 Avant? Just curious, as I am thinking of upgrading as well.

What with our plan to extend the family... But we won't upgrade just yet. Our lease expires in Feb and we'll keep the 98 sedan. Then a year or two from now we'll get a loaded 1.8 Avant.

The economics don't add up yet. There isn't enough of a difference between the 98 and 02... besides the Avant will not be here in Feb so I cannot trade.

I'm confused as hell .

I reserved something from a cheaper class, but when I got there (Sixt in Muenchen Zentrum) they gave the keys to a silver '02 A4 avant. It was a 1.9 TDI (red I -- PD?), FrontTrak, manual with a Navigation Plus. The 1.9 TDI is great; the Nav Plus is not. It's now very clear to me why it's not offered here. The useful information is in the driver display, and the map display is not very helpful.

Overall, it was a great drive. I only with they'd offer FrontTrak (with CVT) on the avant here in the USA.
