Default Amen. I put S-Line badges front/back. There, I said it. Doctor, can you stop the meds now?

Besides I've spent way to much on E-codes, euro blind spot mirrors (the dimmers), horns, brakes, suspension, and interior two tone kit (don't even start about all my exhorbitant R&D costs for the lighted sunroof ****), plus lots of other "stuff". I've EARNED those S-Line badges and I ain't going to give up all that extra HP so there. :P

Then there's the R&D for a PIC microcontroller CAN bus display of engine stats...

Default Mods are bad... mkay

<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/50842/mr_mackey_comment.jpg"></center><p>
"OK Mr. Mackey,... mkay" [aka "insert name here"]

My sentiments exactly.....

I'll do to my car what I want to. Its mine! I paid for it. And if I want to personalize the appearance of it, change the engine to get more power, upgrade the suspension, or install some beautiful 19" chrome wheels, or whatever. Then more power to me [and them]. Some car owners don't even care for, or about, their cars and let them brake down and turn into a junk yard on wheels.
I am an intelligent person who can make an informed decision with regards to why and how I modify my car. And sure, some people will make mistakes or costly errors. It happens all the time with race cars and car manufacturers. Obviously, a car owner has to understand the advantages/disadvantages, good/harm, benefits/drawbacks of their decisions. But that is it. Ultimately, it is their responsibility. And if they want to do something to their car that another person might disagree with (whether based on "real" facts or simply narrow minded tastes), it is still up to them. Thats why its called "ownership".
Honestly; who wrote the rules to this mod thing? It is in a constant flux..always changing, always different. Even the manufacturers are guilty of "modding". They do it each year with the car they just released the year before or with an entirely new model. (But I guess the stock "die hards" oppose that kind of change as well).

So just what is acceptable with regards to mods; only that which is deemed acceptable with car manufacturers, or those who decide to keep their car stock, or make, what they might call "qualified" upgrades? Who will be the judge of that and who has the last word? Will this be the only acceptable "upgrade" path that we can follow (pun intended).
Car manufacturers design and build cars on a mass scale, for mass-consumption so they are going to be built a certain way for the broadest appeal and reliability. And not to forget "profit margins". So, aftermarket mods are a means for people to individualize or change or upgrade their car somehow. To make it more personal, better, beautiful. And yes, once again. It is all subjective. "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder"; whether it be a cosmetic enhancement or under the hood.

And many manufacturers are begining to release cars that mimic more and more what owners do with aftermarket modifications. And what about the concept cars or alternative fuel cars; hybrids, HFC (Hydrogen Fuel Cells), electric,... and all the other, hundreds of cars and concepts being displayed in the hundreds of car magazines. Much of that "change" comes from the desire to modify the car and not always necessarily for the "right" reasons, but to keep up with the times or to break away from archaic designs and tradition. Its the same thing that fuels the interests with car owners to modify their own car. One reason many do it, is because they cannot get (afford) the cars which offer that uniquely, exotic flavor in design and build, because they are the $80K+++ Porsche's, Ferrari's, Lamborghini's,...... Why should they be the only cars to be exotic, unique and fast, but out of reach for 90% of the population.

Is there [in this case] a Audi stone tablet with the commandments chisled into it; "thou shalt not use 19" Chrome wheels"....or, is this the "Stock Audi World Forum". Modders not welcome? Obviously not! It is just the AW Forum and is open to all types of car [owners] whether they be stock or not. There should be no "carism" here. There is no "right", or "only" way. Albeit of course, in circumstances of professional race competition, then certain criteria applies to the laws of physics, technology/mechanics and the cars parts as a whole and realtionship within that given situation. But it ends at the track and everyone is entitled to try what they want. Not everyone wins in a race, do they. So they can't all be correct. Loosen up a little. The forum is not made up of only track racers. Even all the performance shops disagree (or they would all be making the same thing). But if it works for the weekend track racer or the performance shop and they know the downsides of given applications that someone might be considering. Wonderful. They can win the race and explain the reasons it does not work in a track environment. But for us who basically drive on the streets. I think we can take care of ourselves. If we come to the track or race strip to learn a valueable lesson of why our car does not perform good enough for the track, 0-60 or 1/4 mile. Great. Now we know.

People have their tastes, recommendations, opinions, arguments for what is correct and what is not. But it is all at best subjective and only relative to the cars owner and what they might be interested in doing to it with regards to modifying it somehow. Sure, there are insightful answers and helpful experiences. But when it is basically harsh, arrogant criticism or insults to get a reaction. Then it is worthless. We can help direct people in their decision for aftermarket mods, so that they feel more comfortable and informed with the information. But to just blatantly state that one way is correct and another is not, is just not always a valid repsonse. I can think of far worse crimes of car modification then what most of us do to our cars here.
I also have opinions and tastes just like the rest and could get very adamant about how I think some add on or mod seems ugly, out of place or bad. But we can also decide to not saying anything if we have nothing nice to say. (Except of course when it is a matter of genuine concern over the possibility of serious damage to the car).
Each of us cares for their car in a different way; some enjoy it being stock. And others enjoy some slight enhancements. While others want to really push the envelope. Personally, for me, I enjoy making my car a unique, visual statement as a response to all the bland cars out there. No offense stockers. I like the A4 stock. But I want just a little more.....

Default A corny old saying goes,"if it ain't broke don't fix it"...

That's what Grampa Clark said, he was an Oldsmobile mechanic for 30 years. They guy knew his ****, another story. I should have listened to him, I ****ed-up my cars plenty when I was young. I miss-cut an aftermarket sunroof opening once.(corrected with a bigger roof, whew) I actually punched a hole in the muffler in my '84 Corolla because I was disgusted with the performance and timid sound...mistake. Now I kinda know better and I still hear the exact same advice from other highly-qualified mechanics who are also Audi-tuners.(true) I am not so much anti-mod, as accused, I am anti-wasting money. I would not purchase an aftermarket exhaust that is dubious quality and throw out a new stainless factory system until I needed a replacment, that's me. That process is about the same as punching a hole but more expensive, if you think about it.
I do not bust on peoples's cars unless they ask, this begs the question of Jeff's "who the **** cares" and smacks of what is *really* wrong here: people wanting to hear affirmation or their mods, and what good is a bunch of "yes-men" anyway? If someone feels criticised, they should handle it through discussion, people I "argue" with here are often my friends or become friends after hammering out an issue. The advice I give here is good, even though it is not always easy for me to deliver or not totally appreciated by everyone.

Right. If you're modding because you need attention &amp; affirmation you don't want any criticisim.
