Default Service/Check Engine Light

So I own a 2003 A4 quattro1.8tm. I've been gone for 7 months on deployment, when I came back I went to start my car, and when I turned on my car it flashed service on my dash gauges and then the check engine light came on. Now whats the problem? Is this normal, is it something the car does to tell the owner it needs to be serviced? Is it something that I can reset with vag com?

Info:
My car has 75968 miles on it currently.
It was not driven in 7 months but was started every other week for ten minutes or so.
All the fluids and everything was topped off and car was prepped before I left.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Scan with Vagcom, diagnose MIL, & reset MIL.

could be as simple as old gas and engine oil. 7 months is a long time for gas to sit, it will lose octane value and cause the computer to adjust timing. Replace your gas/fill with higher octane gas. There may also be moisture build-up in your oil as well since it was only run for short periods. If you can scan your codes they will let you know for sure, but your O2 sensors are probably recording rich mixture due to old gas not burning correctly.

Good advice.

Suggest you put a can of BG44K in the gas. Change your oil. and follow Doallars advice
