Default Short shifter issue -- help!!

Just had a mechanic install the Neuspeed short shifter. Problem I have is the stick is lose up/down (moves vertically). If I hold it up, shifting is precise and smooth, but if I leave it down in its (now) natural position, I get a big CLANK when I move the shifter to the left, and it's very difficulat to find 1st or to get it in reverse. If I hold it up and lower it (aka pushing it down, as before) then I find the reverse with ease. Sounds to me something is missing (like a spring) in order for the stick to be "pushed up" from underneath.

Please help!!

I would take it back and have them check it, sounds like they forgot to tighten something

Thanks. This may sound dumb, but if there are no springs in there, what causes the resistance to the shifter (when engaging the reverse) when pushing down?

Default I think the diagram I posted doesn't show the actual shifter assembly. There should be a spring.

Here's what it is- he probably didn't use the replacement bolt they send w/ it, I did the same.
