Default Should I add a K&N air filter?

I have a 2004 A4 1.8T, many people have said the Audi airfilter is great and that I will loose power by adding an aftermarket filter. Others have said that the stock filter sucks and to add a K & N asap.

What is your guy's imput?

Default Uh-oh...here goes the battle - updated

Some people say they ruin your MAF sensor due to excess oil from the k&n getting on it.
I have had it for almost 40K without problems...and increased gas mileage and a tad more power

Default Microscopic inspection of the heated wire in the MAF reveals...

A coating of oily crud forms quickly. I will be saying good-bye to my K&N and cleaning the wire with some Q-tips and electronic cleaner.

K&N drop in may result in power loss and potentially ruin your MAF if oil gets in there

I would think the pre-filter would catch most of the oil.

Cleaning your pre-filter once a month would do more good.

How exactly do I clean my stock filter?

Default there is a pre-filter in your intake system....

just take the intake housings out and you'll see it. It's stuck in the last plastic section that is pressed into the filter housing.

There are two screws holding the first part of the intake system in place. Take those out, pull the part out. Then take the springy middle section out. Then pull the last section out of the air box. Be careful because that part has a clip going into a rubber holder. You have to hold on to that rubber holder while pulling up on the plastic intake.
