Well, if you drive a lot, the TDI would be the right choice. You are lucky to have one or two Diesel choices in Europe. Isn't there a 2.5 litre TDI, also?
I had two Jetta TDIs and I liked them both.
The 1.8T is a great engine (Audi's bread and butter engine). My last A4 (2001) was a 1.8T and I had no problems with it. Great car! I am of the impression that the 1.8T might be a little underpowered for the B6 A4, however. That's why I went with the 3.0 in my 2003 A4.
Just my opinions, of course.
Good luck to you.

My dad has it in his 4Motion Passat and it has a ton of low end torque so it is ideal for hauling stuff. It produces 135hp which does not seem much but with all the low end torque it sure makes up for it. Given how fuel price is in Europe I would probably seriously consider one.
I have a 1.8T and I live in the US, and I am very happy with this engine I have it in my wife's Jetta as well and my dad's B5 A4 had it too.

On a Skoda Octavia, mind you. It wasn't as peppy as the 1.8T Audi engine but the fuel economy was unbelievable vs. the 1.8T. Of course the Skoda was about the same size / weight as a Jetta and was not Quattro, but it was a nice engine. And I'm making a big assumption that Audi's 1.9TDI is comparable to the Skoda's.
I wish Audi offered TDIs in Canada

there are 2 versions, 100bhp, and 130bhp, i assume ur comparing the 1.8T to the 130bhp. I love my engine, its suits my style of driving, but if u prefer a smoother drive, less noise, and can sacrifice the fuel economy id go for the 1.8T (but the 1.8T wont hold its value as well)
There is always the 2.0FSI?

how is the 2.0FSI motor? can you tune a 1.9TDI, if so do you know of any good companies? also does the 1.9TDI motor and trans hold up to sporty driving? thanks for all the comments.
