Since our power steering fluid is "Mineral Oil" ONLY and there are no OTC brands (dealer only).....
I'm wondering what I can buy to use, in case I need some and going to the dealer is not practical. What qualifies a PS fluid for our car (what are the required specs)? It seems that Pentosin CHF 11S Hydraulic Fluid or Motul's LHM 'Mineral Hydraulic Fluid would be applicable? My PS fluid was low once and I could not find any OTC brand that seemed applicable, so I ended up waiting to go to the dealer to top it off.

Yeah. It's not a big deal. I was more curious about the specs and what it takes to be applicable.
I also like Motul products, so just curious. Pentosin is VW/Audi OEM sometimes, so it is most likely suitable.

So OEM from Clair you're saying? I can just as easily buy OEM PS fluid from dealer too.
I just think it is odd how there is no info on it in the manual, if it is so special and requires mineral oil only. It might be low for someone out on the road w/o any dealer nearvy and they will just go into Kragen or Pep Boys and grab some Valvoline PS Fluid (which is synth). So then I wonder what the consequences of that can be on our PS if that happens.

no, i was saying if you don't have a OEM dealer near you. they are a source for it.
yes, i actually tried to get 'close' when i needed to top off the fluid in my '88 5000 CS Quattro. system then leaked like you would not believe. dealer claimed it this was the problem.
maybe it wasn't, but it wasn't long after the off the shelf stuff went in. i would like to think you could put some 'equal' in. it works with brake fluid, engine oil, coolant, etc.
but, it is just PS fluid. no real reason to upgrade or use something else. i have a bottle i keep with my track day stuff. i will take a look at it when i get home and see if it reveals any more info about whats really in it.

Gotcha...
You would think you could use other PS fluid brands, but it seems that since it is "Mineral Oil" only, that it might be a touchy situation on the PS system. After reading some of the OTC brands (Valvoline,.. etc) with them being all synth or blends (petroleum), and also the fact that they had warnings about being used on some vehicles (like Honda), it just felt unsafe to use it. Even my tech emphasized "Mineral Oil" only and not to use the OTC stuff. I think the two I mentioned though are applicable ,since they are practically OEM for VW/Auid and have approval/authorization. I need to learn/know more about the types of oil used and why they are meant for specific vehicles PS systems. There should be some detailed info in the manual for this.

It says mineral, use Baby Oil ; ) It's actually the same synth since 1994, Pentosin in the green can
The white can is the older mineral-based fluid which can be replaced with the newer stuff if desired for cold duty. Baby Oil actually works in a failing unit, like an old 5000S, unscented is prefered. I thought maybe there is a new fluid like the CHF 11S, but with more anti-foam agents. I am Flushing my car and want the new MY2003 fluid, if it exists, let me know.
