Default Single tire replacement

I have a '03 Quattro w/sport package. I found a nail in the right rear tire (stock Continental
SportContact2). Took it to Discount tire and they will only put the new tire on the spare and warned me not to put the new tire on because of the wear with the other three tires. What damage can be done if I do put a new tire on with 3 older tires (about 12K in milage)? Thanks.

Default I don't follow.

They'll only put the new tire on the spare? The spare IS a new tire.

Secondly, can they not patch it? If not, what is your alternative? You can put your spare on permanently or put a new tire on...regardless, you're getting a new tire.

Theoretically, you could spend a ridiclously unnecessary amount of money on 4 new tires.

Default Re: Single tire replacement

The nail is too close to the sidewall so it can't be fixed. As for the "spare" that came with the car, I put that on a 6 months ago because I curbed the rim on the orginal rim that was on the right rear. So all five tires that came with the car have wear on them. Discount tire said they won't put a new tire on with 3 other tires with wear. Anyone know what damage they are worried about if I have one new tire with 3 worn tires?

Default with quattro, the tires are all meant to be the same size, otherwise you can damage the system

it sounds like the tire place is being a little paranoid unless the 3 tires on the car are significanly worn. you could always have the "new" tire shaved. i saw a post from Tirerack saying that they will shave a tire for $25 when you order it. don't know if the tire place can shave your tire for you, but might want to explore that option

Default

12k in wear really isn't enough to bother either ESP or Quattro.

Default Just trade your car in for a new A4

Problem solved.

Thats what I did with my 02 Mustang GT to get my Ultra.

So what do you do if you get a flat after some wear on the original four?
Also, I have a ContiSport Contact2 on my spare and four all seasons on my car. Do I have to change the spare to match?

Default put the rear left tire in the trunk as a spare

and use both the spare and the new tire in the rear.

As Tsle stated, unless your front tires are excessively worn down it shouldn't be a big issue.

Default unless the 3 other tires have significant wear, i personally wouldn't worry about it. assuming your

all seasons are the same size as your spare, it also shouldn't be a problem.

Default I'm in the same boat. All 3 local Audi dealers said it's OK to replace 1 tire...

.. the rest of mine are at 70% remaining tread (I measured it).

They said not to worry unless you're approaching 50% on the rest of the tires.

Good luck!
