Default So after having changed oil for the first time on my A4, I attempted the same on wife's TL...

wow, what a fuggin PITA!!! First of all, the gas pedal is so fvckin sensitive, I ended up jumping the ramps I had setup...scared the shiit out of me! Then I had more trouble...I don't know if Acura drain plugs and filters are generally hard to remove, or the last tech fitted on really tight, but it took me hours of effort! In the end, I was only able to drain the oil...I couldn't budge the filter. The damn filter must need a special wrench because a regular strap wrenth is too big. I then went and got a pair of filter pliers, but they were too big too. I was so freakin pissed...I wouldn't have drained the oil had I known that I couldn't even get the filter off. In the end, I'm never doing an oil change on the TL again...I'll gladly pay Acura dealer $29.99 and a FREE car wash next time. I know it's bad to not change the filter, but at least it has fresh oil...I plan on trading it in for an SUV anyway.

easier solution - jam stubby screwdriver in side of filter, then twist

Default Honda service is to leave the filter on for 2x oil changes. Hose clamp or grip tape is a good trick.

My belief is that's why the new Honda filters are so small, so less oil stays behind when oil serviced w/o a change. I take filters off, drain them and re-use them depending on their cost, the oil used and the car. $2 Supertech filters fit Hondas and are good filters, so I change them after long 10k ocis on synth.

Default I tried that once, and the filter just collapsed and wouldn't budge. >

I used an adjustable filter socket first, with 3 teeth that tighten on the filter, they just crushed the filter.

I ended up getting a strap wrench which finally got it off.

It was a cheapo filter, and flimsy compared to the OEM one. (not saying it didn't filter well)

Default The newer Honda oil filters are about the size of Gerber baby food jars.

I'm surprised to hear that they go two OCI's on those baby feeders.

I remember when they used to be the same size as what I used on my old Ford muscle V8's....(Fram PH8A....scary what you can remember from your youth!).

I have used the OEM filter for the S2000 for my Honda before. It is the same size as what Honda used to use before the new smaller filter, and its made in Japan and not Canada -- I've seen some info before where speculation is the Canadian manufacturer is the same as Fram, etc, and the filter is not as well made as the filters from Japan.

Default i tried everything that i could to try to get the strap wrench to fit, but...

that OEM Honda/Acura filter has the width of a can of tuna! I even went to the store and bought an "adjustable" filter wrench (still too big!), not to mention a set of pliers. In the end, I didn't wanna screw anything up, so I just screwed the drain plug back on, topped it off with fresh oil, and called it a day.

The most killer tool is the Chain ViceGrip.
