as far as using your oil, the dealer shouldn't give a rats ***...you can even leave your oil in the back seat when you take it in for service and tell them to put it in for you...shouldn't make any difference.

If you are basing this info from the AoA sludge letter, they only chose to use the VW502 list of oils for customer convenience - that's all. Motul carries the approvals/specs needed and the 8100 Ester E-Tech 0W-40 is perfectly suited for the service intervals described. It also carries Porsche and MB 229.3. Trust me, it's more then fine. Just be sure to always check the oil level and carry an extra liter in the car. I guess you could also get the larger filter if you wanted to (which adds a 1/2 qt to total capacity).

I'm fine with using this 4" Mecca filter. They do have the 6" size, but that's for the V6. I worry about the OEM filter with extended drains of 10K miles. The Mecca may be smaller, but the filtration is much better. I might try it sometime though.

Whew. That's why >2004.5 cars get synth for free. According to Moss-Magnusen Act, if a special propritary part is needed, it MUST be supplied for free. In older carsm the manual calls for API oil, the sludge letter does and cannot superceed the "contract" of your owners' manual. I wonder if the B5ers have figured this out yet.
