Default So since a lot of you here track your cars, may be I can get an answer to my question...

Why do people put tape on the cars for tracking events?

Is there really that much debris flying around? Or is it like a "cool" thing to do?

Default I think it's half and half.

People truly don't want to damage thier cars, but also they go a little over board.

They should tape up the windsheild too. Rock chips are bad.

Default tire dingleberrys do fly around

What happens is..if you are behind someone that has two or more wheels off (he goes OFF the track in front of you) and he comes back on the track..usually little rocks and such fly back and hit your car. People put tape on their car to prevent these little rocks from damaging their paint.

Using painters tape on your car is not a cool thing to do, it is for the anally retentive types. :-) (like me)

Yes, I have used it before..but not in the past 4 years.

Default Ahhhhh... Thanks for the explanation. It makes sense.

I completely forgot that cars do sometimes go off track.

Default because your car can get pelted with stones, rubber, and anything that>

might come off the car ahead.
With the tires all warm and sticky, they tend to fling things.

I've had a windshield cracked from a rock, and I usually only tape the lights since those will crack easily if slammed with a rock at high speeds. Plus you're often following someone very closely at high speeds, so your car gets hit quite often.

YES some people go overboard, and they are usually the ones with pristine cars that are afraid to get 1 rock chip on the front.
It's cheap protection and it's worth putting it on.
