So um, where does the rev limiter kick in exactly? On the 3.0 v6?

Default So um, where does the rev limiter kick in exactly? On the 3.0 v6?

I have watched the needle climb up to 7k before I've shifted and there was no perceptible loss of power / fuel cut off. Redline on the dial starts at around 6400. Is this safe?

Default Its a soft limiter im guessing

and I assume that when youre shifting, you let off the accelerator at above 6000, probably ~6250 or so? and then the revs probably keep rising as you depress the clutch...

So I doubt youd feel anything...

Default hmm... I wonder at what point it actually cuts out completely...

I've shifted around 6750 rpm before and didn't notice any real performance loss. Weird.

I wonder how bad consistently revving the engine up to 7k would be. And what AoA would have to say about that.

Not that I redline the car all that often (watch the mileage plummet, lol), but I am kinda wondering how safe it would be to push it on a regular basis.

Default first of all

at that high an RPM, youre pretty much out of the engines sweet spot anyway, you probably wouldnt notice the limiter as your rate of acceleration would be dipping after you pass the engines peak RPM anyway.

As for engine wear, its good to push the engine every so often, cruise fast, etc etc when the engines thoroughly warmed up anyway, BUT.

If you always rev high, hard and fast and if youre consistantly redlining you will be putting a lot of wear on your engine, especially if you go into the mid to high 6000's frequently.

Every so often, when youre tempted, just try and ration yourself ;o) (that is if you dont want to have heavy maintanance after a few years, if youre gonna keep the car that long)

Modern engines are tough, but I remember neil armstrong once said.

well, not word for word, but he mentioned that we all have a fixed number of heartbeats in this life, and hed be damned if he spent his life wasting them.

Similarly, our engines have a lot of heart beats in them, but you will make it beat faster at higher RPMS.
Nothing is infallible (except me)

Default "wouldnt notice the limiter"....of course you would!

On my previous car the limiter kicked in at 6500 rpm and man did you feel it! The engine starts to vibrate and major loss of power.

I've been up to 7000 rpm with my A4 but never hit any limiter. I'm not gonna try any >7K RPM ;P

Anyway, you say you won't notice the limiter...well, just shift in second gear and try to reach 130 km/h without shifting up....wanna bet you'll feel the limiter kick in?

yeah but isnt it suggested that this is a soft limiter?

Default stares, i know that, stares again... :p

I mean, I dont see why it couldnt be a soft limiter whether it was computer controlled or mechanically controlled.

Default Soft Limit @ 7000 r/min

I have a b6 a4 3.0 v6 6spd, it has a soft limiter that kicks in at exactly 7000 rpm. It is software controlled - there is no "bouncing off the limiter," it just feels like a swift but smooth rolling off the throttle.
