Don't try it; you'll end up in a ditch ... or worse!
The rubber compound in your summer tires hardens when the temperature drops and your tires will lose their grip. If you ever have to make an emergency stop on snow, slush or ice, you may slide a lot.
Even with quattro, it's best to use snow tires, or at least all-season tires, in the winter.

agreed - quattro builds a fake sense of security...
by making it easy for you to "go", regardless of the road conditions. However, it does not help you "stop", unless you have the right tires.

I've never actually driven on summer tires in the snow, but I've read enough horror stories here on AudiWorld that make me never want to try it either.
All it takes is one (even small) accident. How much is your deductible? For most people it is around $500. Plus, the risk of your car insurance rates going up. For that amount, you can almost buy a set of 15" steelies with winter tires, but more importantly, you're buying yourself a piece of mind, and it's hard to put a price tag on that.
