Default Sport Tire Question 1.8Q

First No Flames.. Has anyone run the sport tires (S9090) in a little snow yet. If so how do they handle. I live a an area that gets about 2 -3 inches max. Thanks in advance.

Default

Last year, many who ran on summer tires ended up curbing their car.

Default Well....It's not about the amt of snow but the ambient temp....

Anything below 50F and high performance tires are hockey pucks. The compound gets hard and the level of traction drops. What is your average winter temperature? A seperate set of rims with winter/Ice type tires ( Alpins, Blizzaks, etc)
is cheap insurance.

it's below 50 most of the winter. I have a 4 wheel Benz to use most of the time but you never know. I guess I will look for a set of wheels and tires used or call tire rack, 16 or 17's?

Default "wreck" lol! nice screen name. could be used to answer your question :-)

Seriously though, do you get 2-3" of snow during the whole winter, or do you get a number of snow storms, with each one of them dropping 2-3" of snow on the ground?

Also, snow is not they only consideration, but also low temps - 40F and below, as well as icy roads.

If you don't want to pay for a separate set of winter wheels, you may want to at least consider changing your current summer tires to all-season tires.

Default blah blah blah....

I wonder if any of you guys who make these claims actually ran summer tires in any kind of adverse conditions.

Last night in NJ it was 34-37 degrees with steady rain/sleet. My ContiSport Contacts ("summer") were just fine in my 25 mile commute home. Am I getting a set of A/S or Snow tires for winter? Sure, I don't want to go the whole season on summer tires but... you guys are like chicken little with the sky falling if anyone ventures out on summer rubber past October.

50 degrees? They're good down to 34 in my estimation. Rain? No problem. Sleet? No problem. Of course in snow it'll be another story.

Default I'm using 16's, Narrower contact patch, less $ and more selection...

You can go with steelies or a cheap alloy. I went with the alloys for my Avant for looks.

Default Or if you don't want to get an extra set...

Use the Benz this winter and stay out of the Audi if any chance for snow or ice. Then when the sport tires burn off, just get an all season like Dunlop SP Sport 5000.

Default It's not that you can't run summers below 50F but the margin of safety drops...

I use as a reference Audi Experience Instructors in Austria who use 50 F as their guideline.
Again,it's the temperature not the snow. This isn't rocket science. It's you choice as to how much safety you want. Quattro doesn't stop you.

Default I intentionally tried to break them loose

and it was a no go even in sleet. I'm not saying performance wasn't hindered, just that you probably wont dump your car w/summers unless it's acutally snowing or dry but below freezing.

Nokian sells summer tires that have an indicator which changes color at 34 degrees. That's another reason why I think it's ok to go below 50. 50 seems quite high.
