my elbow was always hitting the cup and I spilled a couple of coffees. With my new holders my elbow and arm are always above the drink and I've never even come close to spilling since. It is out of the way of the emerg brake and does not interfear with driving in any way. Besides that hole in the console was useless for me. I really love them and it is probably the best feature in the car.....and I did it!! (*pride*)

you need 1/4" hardwood base plate, cut to the exact dimensions of the bottom of the hole. 4 hardwood dowel pieces. I believe I used 1/2" dowel. 1/4" Aluminum plate with 3" holes and rounded edges. Now the height of the dowels will depend on your most common drink. I made these holders to mainly hold the paper Starbucks/Tim hortons cups. Although they hold burger king and McDonalds cup great also. Most cups are 3 and 1/2" at top and 2 and 1/2" at the base. You want your cup to sit about 1/2" into the hole. This holds the bottom securely. You also want the Aluminum holder to fit approx 1/2" below bottom of the cup. Don't make them so high that the arm rest won't go down all the way.
Paint the base flat black to match interior and polish the aluminum with chrome/aluminum polish. Get counter sunk screws and counter sink screw holes for a clean finished look and screw it together. If you made the base to exact dimensions the depth of the hole will hold the cup holder perfectly and it will not move unless you pull it out. Make sure you use counter sunk screws in the base also so it sits flat and on the whole base.
