starter motor squeal

My 2002 1.8T will sometimes produce this "wind-down squeal" from the starter motor. It doesn't happen every time and I can't seem to correlate it to any particular air temperature or how long the engine has been off before starting it up again.
The squeal occurs after the engine has actually started up running on its own but before I've released the key from the "start" position in the ignition switch. As soon as I release the key, squeal seems to go away. My car and I have been playing this game for about 8 months now and the car doesn't fail to start, but the noise is obnoxious!
I thought I read somewhere in the forums that it could be a short circuit in the starter motor itself but I couldn't find the posting. Do I need to replace the starter motor?
Thanks!
