Hi!
I suddenly got a problem with my car when going to work this morning. It starts, then stops after 2-3 seconds.
No matter how many tries it would always stop again, so had to borrow another car to get to work ( not the first time with this car ). anyway, heres what i've tried so far:
- I can rev it to over 4k, and then it will keep going, stop, keep going, stop, and as soon as I let the pressure of the pedal it dies.
-tried with both sets of keys to rule out the immobilizer
-shorted positive to ground for half a minute to reset ecu
-removed fuse for fuel pump, then it will only start a couple of times, before its completly dead, so hopefully ruled the pump out.
-checked all relevant fuses
its dark and raining like hell here know, so havent troubleshooted anymore, but what would be my next step?
I'm thinking fuel filter, but the car was running fine yesterday, so its a bit strange.
Anybody had similar problems? Help would be greatly appriciated!

Fuel filter is pretty unlikely- they don't usually just suddely clog solid. A restrictive filter would tend to reduce pressure at high-flow, in other words wide open at high RPMs.
My first guess would be an air leak, then next a MAF sensor, then coolant temp, etc. If you had access to a VAG-COM scan tool, you could find fault with, or rule out the sensors.
So start by looking for a split rubber duct, loose clamp, etc. Once our Passat did something like this, and it turned out to be a diverter valve hose that had come loose.

located the fault today. when disconnecting the MAF, the car started fine. So bought a new one and replaced it, running good now. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction turbo510

Unfortunaly I have to bring this thread up again.
After I installed the new MAF-sensor I got a check engine light. I tought this was due to the engine controller getting used to the new MAF, but it didnt go out after a couple of hours driving.
Checked the car with VAG-COM, where it says MAF low circut (or something similar). Anyway, checked the new MAF visually, and noticed that the sensor was mounted the wrong way in the housing. They had forced the mounting screws into the housing plastic, instead of turning it the right way and using the pre-drilled holes, idiots!
Flipped it the right way around, and started the car. It then stalls just like before, so Im back to square one... It runs fine with the maf disconnected.
Ive checked the vacuum hoses and cant find anything wrong, anywhere specific I should look? Any other tips?
