Default Steering Fluid loss cause (kinda long).....

just got back from my 20K service and amoung the little annoying things being fixed (shrinking hood pad, squeeky brakes, glove box that won't stay shut, speaker cutting out - can't locate the TSB for this, was one ever issued?? can't locate in the search) there comes a major issue. I told them to check the continual loss of power steering fluid. The Service Manager figured it was the return hose gumming up and the fluid leaking onto the belly pan and being soaked up (thus no puddle). Well upon further review, the leak is actually the POWER STEERING PUMP AND THE STEERING RACK THEMSELVES leaking. Seems that the hose is not the issue on mine (even though they will replace it too). There is a leak that starts in the pump itself and then there is a secondary leak in the steering rack. Both have been ordered but the rack is on a "MAJOR BACK-ORDER" (per the computer, there are 6 others on order besides mine). Car is fine to use, just need to keep an eye on the steering fluid.
So for those of you that have a steering fluid leak, you might have the dealer check this out to see if it is more than just the return hose. Otherwise car is great and the service was outstanding (major props to A4NCAR). So waiting for all of the parts (everything should be in next week except for the rack, that could be a month).

Default My PS pump went out in the first year of ownership

I had a leak as well. Found the reservoir bone dry one day.

Default Sorry to hear about the PS problems. But glad you are being taken care of....

They're cool guys, huh?

Did they have an ETA for that "rack"? I kind of know the feeling though with what you are experiencing; my old VW had that in a major way (pump & rack). But on your car! That's not good. Sounds like another Gremlin is in there Audi.

I mentioned the driver side speaker problem as well to them.

Default I just went in on Monday for the

same issue. I have put in over a bottle of fluid in the last 8 weeks. Dealer told me "they tightened the hoses" and it should be ok.... now you have me wondering.

Have to keep an eye on it. Have oil spots on the garage floor...
