stereo rehaul
I am going to replace the bose system in my 96 A4 quattro. I am most likely going to do only 4 speakers (front door components and reae deck). I have heard that I can do 5 1/4 components in the front and 6 1/2 in the deck. Can anyone confirm this? Also any modifications that must be performed? Does anyone know of any reputable online audio stores (alpine/JL audio sales perferred)? Thanks for any help.

couple things...
first, if you're redoing the stereo, definitely also get a sub, even if you don't listen to rap. i personally listen to a mix, and while my sub is great for the rap, it also makes rock that i listen to better and when i'm listening to jazz, helps make the mids and highs clearer because those speakers only have to cover a narrower band. Second, those sizes sound right, but while you can get alpine stuff online at crutchfield.com, its probably cheaper to go to a local store. And JL Audio is only officially available through stores, they don't do online sales. there are wholesalers you can buy from online, but you don't get a warranty, which can suck if your amp or speaker blows (like my 300/4 did, but fortunately, its being repaired under warranty at no charge except shipping to me)

Re: couple things...
I am hoping to get a alpine deck, JL vr 5 1/4 components for the front and vr 6 1/2 for the rear deck. I am going to power them with 300/4 and a 500/1 for the sub. Right now I have a Fosgate Punch but will soon go to the 12w6. I hope to install it myself so the thought of buying from a store where I will be paying much more sucks but at the same time I don't want to get cayght out without a warranty.

sounds like it'll be a good setup...
I can tell you that JL makes great amps...when i went to replace my 300/4 (I'm getting the old one repaired so i can sell it), the guy at the store was completely blown away - he said it was the first time he'd ever heard of a JL amp blowing.
