for many fans the manual remains the most fun. Until January of this year, I've owned nothing but manuals since 89 and for the most part have enjoyed the connected driving experience of a manual. However, I'm also a fan of technology and amazed at the smooth driving pleasure that only the CVT can provide. Its also the quickest stock A4 (got to be good with manual quattro to match it).

When mated with quattro, the optimal combination will be here. Like docjan UK said, you can use the multitronic in manual shift mode, its the best tiptronic like system on Earth. I truly believe that manuals will fade when a CVT system arrives that outperforms the manual with the driver selecting his or her own gears in multitronic. Unfortunately, manual shifting in multitronic is slower than pure manual. In the meantime, I enjoy the suprised looks on the drivers of BMW 3 autoboxes as they can't catch or blow by my 3.0 CVT. They dont see a CVT badge and, probably, don't even know about one thing about multitronic. Gotta love this.

If CVT bests a manual in the tiptronic (like) shift mode, you'd be hard pressed to stay with the manual. Unless, you like stomping continually on a clutch or dropping a clutch to spin the occasional tires.
