Default Stiff Gear lever when warm

When the engine has warmed up the gear lever becomes very stiff in the neutral left to right plane and stops springing back to the middle. Going into gears is fine. Can someone tell me what actualy provides the force to spring the gear lever back to the middle, is there a spring under the lever itself or is it at the gearbox end? is the spring inside or outside the gearbox? I have tried greasing the plastic ball/socket under the lever but this did not help. It appears there are two shfts running to the lever the selector rod and the pushrod,i pressume the selctor actually moved the gears but what does the pushrod do? Is there a way of greasing the shift linkage going into the gearbox without removing it? PS car is B6 1.9TDI Quattro
Thanks a lot in advance

Default What year is your 1.9TDIQ?

Maybe the shift mechanism/linkage just needs to be cleaned and relubed? I would start there, first, and if the problem persists, maybe take a close inspection of the gearbox mounts, and front snub-mounts for wear.

Ya might consider changing the gearbox oil, or checking its level...

Hi thanks for the response. it is a late 2004. Do you know how to access the linkage at the gearbox end in order to clean/lubricate, do I need to dismantle anything? Do you know in what way would the mounts affect the linkage only when the engine is warm? So I understand does the gearbox oil level or quality affect the linkage? Are there springs inside the gearbox which provide the force to centre the gearlever in neutral when pushed side to side is the pushrod responsible for this? Do you know where I could get a diagram of the linkage mechanism so I understand how it works?

Thanks again for the advice it is appreciated.

Default You should seek out some reference material....

in your local area/country.

The shift linkage is "external" to the B6 A4 manual gearbox's. The shifter assembly can be removed and re-lubed from inside the cab of the car.

You can use this link to relube your shifter mechanism-<ul><li><a href="http://www.a4mods.com/index.php?page=webcontent/pages/clutch.html#index.php?page=webcontent/pages/shortshifter.html">http://www.a4mods.com/index.php?page=webcontent/pages/clutch.html#index.php?page=webcontent/pages/shortshifter.html<
