I have Icebears in 235/45/17. Call your local Discount Tire.

That's too wide for winter IMO. Get some steelies in 16" if you can.

Default If I were to buy a set of dedicated winter tires, I'd look into some Nokian's....

Look at their WR's and WRG2's, they come in the size you need....

<a href="http://www.nokiantires.com/product-group?group=1.01" target="_new">clicky</a>

Back in the day (2002-or-so) they had some really great write ups on use for winter tires -- they are an all-season tire that actually carried the snowflake symbol (winter/ice rating) on their sidewall versus the standard all-season-rating symbol....they were that good in the snow and ice. I don't know if they still carry the snow-rating currently or not.

A few people on the forums have posted good feedback about them in the past for winter setup use.

STFA on 'Nokian' and Google 'Nokian + winter + review' and similar keywords.

In our area, Tire Factory has the exclusivity on Nokian's. The WR's may be special order.

Default 17" inch in that size + quattro would be good to go where he lives....

I run Michelin Pilot Sports A/S in that size and I barrel up snow-covered hills with no problem with them. I've even stopped on hills to see if I can get traction from a dead stop on semi-compact snow/ice and never had a problem. Quattro rules.

Driving frequently on unplowed roads may warrant switching to a thinner tire.

Tweak the size. 16s would be better. fwiw, Hankook IceBears are pretty awesome.
