Default Synthetic oil database is updated to include Motul HTHS numbers...

If you have a favorite oil and a link to their verifyable MSDS numbers for viscosity index, flashpoint, HTHS, and the likes than please e-mail them to me or post them under this thread and ill include them in this database. Cheers! Mike

SyntheticOilDatabase

Default Why only synthetic? 15w-40 dino has high numbers.

Take a look at how these formulations behave under high shear rates, ie: 100,000 cycles/sec...I think this data speaks for itself, so I won't bother explaining it: ok, better base oil DOES have better HT/HS numbers for it's viscosity grade.

M1 0w-40 is 14.7 Cst @ 100C
High Temp/High Shear is 3.6 Cp @ 150C

Delvac 1 5w-40 is 14.7 Cst @ 100C
High Temp/High Shear is 4.0 Cp @ 150C

Amsoil 10w-40 is 14.7 Cst @ 100C
High Temp/High Shear is 4.2 Cp @ 150C

Red Line 10w40 is 14.6 cSt@100C
HTHS=4.7

Red Line 5w40 is 15.1 cSt@100C
HTHS=4.6

Red Line 10w30 is 10.7 cSt@100C
HTHS 3.8

This chart explains everything

Default VI is unimportant, Typical FP=+405f, W-rating is more relavent than PP, HT/HS is a function of...

absolute viscosity. I'll look for a ht/hs number for you, but it will fall within line with what is required for a 40 weight oil, like 3.7-4.5. Honestly, you can't tell much about how an oil will work by it's specs. Even a lab analysis of virgin oil can tell you about it's additives, or lack of, but it can't tell you about basestock. A high quality base will show low additives, but work better. High quality base will need less VI improvers to meet specs, showing a low VI index, again misleading. Used oil analysis is more indicative of how well an oil works, holding TBN, Viscosity etc.

Default Saying a flashpoint of +405f and HTHS of 3.7-4.5 isn't very specific...

These are indeed important numbers that do measure how an oil performs in our engines. I would much prefer having an oil with a HTHS of 4.5 in my car than 3.7 all other things being eqaul. Having a falshpoint of 480degrees versus 430 degress is also quite significant. These numbers are quite important in selecting a motor oil. These numbers do represnt oil analysis results. Cheers! Mike
