There's no CVT lag if you...
...manually start in first, shift up to second, then third, and slide it back to multitronic from there. In fact, it's scary how fast it'll redline and the butt dyno gives this technique a strong thumbs up. However, practice it first in an open area. It really took me by surprise the first time I tried it and I almost rear ended someone (too distracted by the rush).
I love that turbo whine.
BTW it seems like doing this has now "taught" the CVT to accelerate faster (and less to no lag) if I just leave it in D. Conversely, if I just leave it in D, it then starts to forget being faster, starts to increase the lag, and needs to be "taught" again.
Anyone else experimenting with manual shifts on the CVT?

After coupla weeks, never had the lag issue... learnt my style?
just gotta push down to a certain level on the pedal, not redline all the time, just be a bit more generous that with manual.

very interesting, makes sense, gotta try it....
I did manual shifting like yours, during break-in, but I didn't pay attention to performance gains at those moments. Should do that again!
I tried manual shifting in other situations, and... keep it in "D". It's just doing much better than me.
Although there two situations where I *do* switch to tip mode:
1. Spool-up turbo while I am waiting for the opportunity to change the lane, or to pass. As soon as I step on accel to actually perform the manoeuvre, I put it back to D.
2. Steep downhill at low speed (20-25 mph). I know, there is "engine braking", but it is slow to engage in that case. Instead of waiting, I just put it in 3rd (it's on my way to work, so I know it ahead).
BTW, what you described in your second paragraph is quite along Audi's claims that CVT is "adapting to your driving style". Funny to watch a machine when it thinks it knows what you want, right?

What would you like to know?
I have posted a lot of feedback over the last couple of months about it. If I still haven't answered your questions, please let me know, I'll be more than happy to share it with you!
