Default To those with "heavy" wheels....

especially Oettingers or Moda R6s or other wheels that are heavier than stock....did you notice any significant loss in performance when you added those wheels? I've heard some people say wheel weight is very important in acceleration, others who say it doesn't matter that much.

Default I think the tech article here is bogus. Mass is concentrated on the outer lip, linear models no good

A quick glance of the article looked like they used a disk as a model that has it's mass evenly distributed which is vastly different from the shape a wheels actually has. There is an effect on your car and it is substantial, why do you think race wheels are forged or magnesium? Carbon-fiber rotors are in part for weight as are cross-drilled rotors. Your Audi's suspension is even designed with aluminum to reduce unsprung weight! Don't load your suspension up with mods that reduce performance. Bigger heavyweight wheels with oversize tires and brakes are like a runaway train, think of a big wheel rolling that has to be stopped (or started) before it even has an effect on the car body! I thought of another analogy, try 30 lbs in a backpack verses the "rotating-mass" of that same 30lbs, 15 lbs on each ankle!!! More stress on other front-end parts too, more energy required for shock rebound (slower), etc etc.

Default I couldn't tell a damn difference...but, I also don't care cause I'd rather have nice looking...

wheels than be super fast. I'm running Mille Miglia Evo 5 in 19". Those are DAMN heavy from what I hear.

Default I understand that for max performance, I should go with lightweight everything...

and I understand your argument, know that heavier wheels will low my car down, but what I'm asking is essentially, will my "butt dyno" feel the impact of a couple extra pounds on each wheel?

Default Not in your butt, but in the steering feel. Do you notice an extra passenger? It's about the same,

extra 5lbs a corner, 20lbs total rotating mass X 10 is similar in effect to 200lbs non-rotating mass, about equal to a passenger. There are other effects rom a wider larger heavier set-up: loss of steering feel, reduced suspension compliance over bumps, more likely to aquaplane, reduced braking and acceleration. Considering the cost of wheels and tires and imo, horrible tire choices in 18+ sizes, I would not use that stuff on my car. I got some BBS RX last year, 16" for $200 a pop, good weight but strong. OZ are great and they have a new replacable lip model, check them out in 17" if you want an awesome set-up.

Default OK...but if I used the same tire width for the 17s as I would for 18 inchers, wouldn't that have

the same effect on handling and feel? and by the way, thanks for all the help so far

Default If it is the same width, the only effects the same would be steering feel and hydroplane resistance-

Rotating mass, rebound mass, would remain high. Ride would suffer from the reduced tire height, tire being your inital shock absorber. Wheel/tire damage, price, and selection all make a leap into the silly at 18" size. Tire sidewall flex would be ever so slightly less in lower aspect-ratio sizes, how hard do these guys corner anyway?

Default Thanks...

I don't think I'd push the limits too often even with 17s...its just I want bigger rims, but not too big, and I'm trying to guage how big is too big
