Default For those of you with factory xm radio

i bought the reciever from clariparts, and the sound quality sucks. took it back to the dealer, they said nothing was wrong. the radio isnt fuzzy, but it is not cd quality sound. is this supposed to be like this. The xm radio, does not produce the same volume and sound of a cd. Is something wrong here? please let me know.

Default factory XM will have a slightly lower volume than CD or AM/FM

as far as clarity and quality, XM is not supposed to be nor claims to be CD quality...it should sound better than FM though...hope this helps

Default I'm not the worlds #1 audiophile, but my XM sounded CD quality to me (more)

have you tried adjusting your tone (bass/mid/treble) for the XM? The deck has independent settings for XM/FM/CD (don't know about AM, but you get the point). Also, hold down Menu for a few seconds for a bonus menu. There is one setting currently set at -6 (NAV/CD maybe?)...anyhoo...if you turn it up to 0 it's somewhat the equivalent of the 'Loud' feature on aftermarket decks.

Default They do claim digital quality, so unless they're cutting out the frequency range...

wouldn't this essentially be CD quality? It's all about the 1's and 0's.

Default not necessarily...like i said, it's better than AM/FM

but in general, it's my understanding that XM or Sirius for that matter are not CD quality and should not be held to that standard...like you i'm not the greatest Audiophile (I can't tell the difference between CD and XM clarity either)...just going by what i've heard...hope this helps

Default satellite radio is NOT CD quality no matter what they say

think of how much compression they have to use to be able to get you so many different channels...that is all

Default actually it's not just about the 1 and 0s, it's about how the music is encoded into those 1/0s

and just because it's digital doesn't mean that its CD quality.

CD is 400kbps. Most MP3s are about 128k. Good MP3s are like 192k. And digital quality that actually sounds like a CD is not MP3 at all.

Even MP3s at 400k don't sound like a CD, because they are encoded differently.

Only CDs are actually CD quality. The next best thing is AAC, which many people are using now.

I'll try to find the numbers again, but satelite radio is streamed at about the equivalent of like 150 - 170 k. I forget exactly, but I'll try to find that info again and post about it.

Default You're right, I totally forgot about compression. And while on the subject...

I heard vinyl was the best media...something about a digital wave excludes some of the sound attributes that an analog wave includes. Is this a fact?

Default yes, regardless of the method of compression, if its digital it doesn't sound as good as clean vinyl

there's also sampling effects (in digital compression) that can create/destroy sounds within the actual recording. Whether or not you can hear them depends, but you can tell the difference between analogue and digital.
