Default For those of you who want to hook up two audio sources to your radio (iPod/XM) here's a solution...

USA SPEC (<a href="http://www.usaspec.com/">www.usaspec.com</a>) makes an adaptor that allows you to hook up an iPod and control the iPod via the radio plus it has an additional Auxillary input (RCA input) for another device.

From what I understand you hit the CD button and it scrolls from CDC 1 = iPod to CDC 2 = Auxillary input.

I have the non-iPod version (has two sets of RCA inputs) if someone wants to buy it. I just bought it locally from a guy but I just found the iPod version of which I'd rather have since I have an iPod 30GB plus a TAO XM2GO.

Oh ya, I'm putting my phatbox up for sale in the classifieds too.<ul><li><a href="http://www.crutchfield.com/S-SBfL9beImBe/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?search=usa+spec&amp;i=581PA11VW">http ://www.crutchfield.com/S-SBfL9beImBe/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?search=usa+spec&amp;i=581PA11VW</a></li></ul>

Default I just read that the unit only supports 5 playlists....

<center><img src="http://www.audiooutfitter.com/images/items/145138-uspdfbmw.jpg"></center><p>
but within each playlist you can put all your songs.

I'm not willing to create special playlists on my iPod just to use it in the car. I guess I'll stick with the USA SPEC DF-VW unit I have which supports two Aux inputs. This way if I want to get rid of the iPod and use a different MP3 player I don't have to get a new adaptor. <ul><li><a href="http://www.audiooutfitter.com/store/72839/DFVW.html">http://www.audiooutfitter.com/store/72839/DFVW.html</a></li></ul>

Default even cheaper for me because I bought it used locally! Woot! BTW, you have to buy

an additional cable that supports the Audi Radios. The default unit comes with the VW cable. I'm not sure if you can order it direct without having to pay extra and just have them swap the cables that the unit comes with? It might be worth calling the manufacturer about.

you can't just play from your library or playlists... it has to be controlled through the car?

Default ah good point, I have no idea!...I'm assuming that if you want to control the ipod through

your radio you can only use the buttons to scroll through your existing playlist that is open (either chosen manually via the ipod or from the radio) or to move to one of the 5 pre-defined playlists via the radio. Why it's limited to 5 makes no sense to me.

Default Oh...

yeah I wouldn't use a feature like that anyway. I like cycling through the iPod itself. That said I guess it's nice because then you can wire the iPod to your glove box and keep it completely out of sight.

Default If its anything like the Audi OEM iPod controller... (long)

which I have in my B7, the reason it has 5 playlists is that it emulates the built-in 6-disk CD changer. The 6th "disk"/"playlist" defaults to whatever album/playlist/artist/etc. was last playing.

There are three distinct advantages to the set up. 1) It charges while it's connected
2) You can "hide" the iPod in the glovebox
3) You can control though the radio and/or steering wheel control

HOWEVER, this is FAR from an ideal solution. There are a number of short falls. First, (and this is assuming this unit works similarly to the OEM unit), all direct iPod controls are disabled. You can ONLY control through the radio. So you couldn't scroll forward to see what is coming up, make another playlist, etc. (This is probably more of an issue if your co-pilot is in charge of tunes). 2nd, it defaults to the first five playlists, so you have to have those defined before you even get in the car. That is a major drag for me. 3rd, there is a delay between when a song, album, etc. starts playing and when the info shows on the radio screen. It is kind of annoying when scrolling through (similar to the TiVo delay).

Overall, I'd MUCH prefer an RCA input (even GM has figured this one out) and lose the charging ability than this "integrated" functionality. As a matter of fact, I still keep the ghetto tape adaptor and use that more frequently than the iPod connection. Since it was negotiated as a condition of purchase, I'm not upset about it, but if I had actually laid out cash for the install, I'd be pissed.

Default If that's the case you might like my setup....

RCA hookup all the while it charges when it plays and at line out.
