I searched for an answer first but could not find what i was looking for.
I have a 2003, with about 65k on it. When do i need to start thinking about getting the timing belt changed. Any input would be welcomed

Default now would be a good time.

its not worth the risk of completely screwing your motor just to get an extra 10k mi. out of the belt.

Default If you don't have extended warranty...do it now.

I have extended warranty and was waiting to change my belt at 75K. If it fails before then, then it's covered by them. Still, I did mine at 68K because they found a water pump leak so I had them do the timing belt as well.

On the other hand, for no extended warranty if it fails before the "recommendation" then no one will else will pay for all the affected damaged parts from the failure PLUS timing belt cost.

As a comparison a friend of mine who drives a 2002 A4 Audi hasn't done the timing belt and I think he's now at 95K miles. I was surprised he managed to go that far at all, not in parts failure but in gambling to not even replace it.
