Default timing belt job

what parts should be included in a complete timing belt job, i.e., water pump, thermostat, accessory belt, tensioner roller, relay roller, idler roller, tbelt, dampener, 2 valve cover gaskets. I've heard front crankshaft and crankshaft seal.

how many hours is a tbelt job?

Most people will agree, the following is as comprehensive as it gets:

# OE timing belt
# OE tensioner Roller
# OE tensioner assembly
# OE Idler roller (comes on the tensioner assembly)
# Water pump with metal impeller
# 4 OEM crankshaft pulley bolts
# Accessory Drive Belt
# Camshaft seal
# Crankshaft seal

Personally, I'd get the kit with G12 coolant because you will need to top off after you do the water pump. Also, some people add a thermostat because you are already "in there" but they fail a lot less often than the B5 older brother.

I have a B6 3.0 Quattro with 62K miles and will have to get this job done at some point in the near future. Could you tell me how much something like will cost you? unless you're doing it yourself or thru someone you know...

I was told its about a $1000 including parts and labor at Audi dealers. Thanks!

Depending what part of the country you come from, here in the Washington state you are looking at anywhere between $900 - $1650 at independent shops. The stealership will charge you over $2,000 that is Barrier and University Audi. Parts alone are about $500. Labor rates vary.

Ah, for the 3.0 things are much different! Much less stuff breaks!

To be honest, I only do the timing belt, tensioner roller and the two relay rollers for the 3.0. Once again you could do a thermostat and housing but the water pump lasts much longer on the V6 as compared to the 1.8t.

So really, I would just get this, click click. If you get a thermostat you will also need some coolant because you will lose some while changing the thermostat. I recommend two jugs.

You are looking at about 300 in parts and three or four hours of your time. I'd recommend recruiting a friend too, they can hold the cams for a minute while you swap belts. Just be sure to mark everything's location. There is no way I would pay 1000 for a dealership to do this service.

Semi off-topic post: I did my timing belt about 18 months ago on my 3.0Q. I didn't change the thermostat. Now, the engine temp gauge on my tachometer doesn't work. Does the thermostat you referenced control this?

The thermostat controls water flow. Your issue sounds like a coolant temp sensor. Way easier to replace: Click here for new sensors. The CTS sends signal to your cluster, but usually when they go bad your car runs poorly too.

You may have an broken cluster. I think I'd replaced the sensor and see if that corrects the issue. There is a DIY floating around here for it.
