Default Tiptronic question...

I have an 05 A4 1.8T Quattro w/Tiptronic AT. Question is that there seems to be an extra shift in 2nd gear when using manual shift mode. When shifting from 1st to 2nd, after the initial shift into 2nd the transmission will often shift an additionl time before leveling out in 2nd. Only gear it happens in. Noticeable and a little annoying. Anybody else with a tiptronic notice this during manual shifts?

Thx.

Default Well, when do you shift into 2nd?

My guess is you shift early enough that by the time you're in 2nd you have too few revs and so the torque converter "slips" some to give you a bit more torque. Once past a certain speed the TC "locks" and give you that "shift". On my 3.0, if I shift at around 2000rpm, I'd get this "shift" you mentioned.

Default That is the torque converter clutch closing or locking up.

Hopefully, knowing what is causing the bump you feel in second gear, will reduce your reaction to it. After awile, most peaple don't notice it as much as they did at first.

Default Re: Well, when do you shift into 2nd?

Normal shift from 1st to 2nd at anywhere from 2500 to 3000 rpm. The shift into 2nd is fine, but then under normal accel in 2nd it will sometimes shift another time(still in 2nd) almost as if in reg drive mode. This happens before i can get revs up(3000 or so) for a normal shift from 2nd to 3rd. The only time I can get it not to happen is if I either jump on it and do a power shift from 2nd to 3rd, or if I basically let off gas briefly to avoid this addtl shift(on it's own) in 2nd.

Strange...

Okay, is this normal? Any way to avoid besides jumping on it and having turbo gulp gas? Not to mention beating on the engine before warmed up?

It only happens in 2nd using maunual shifts. It seems to me there's no way there should be a second unexpected shift in 2nd gear when you've already shifted into 2nd, are under normal load, and waiting for speed to shift into 3rd.

I've been a strictly manual trans driver my entire life, and this is like the auto trans is somehow overriding the manual shift function in the tiptronic.

Thx,

Default Yes, it is normal. If you can learn to expect it, maybe you won't be so irritated, more...

The function of TCC closing/lockup causes a small step drop of engine rpm, (torque converter fluid slip is zero.) the trans is not actually shifting ratios. The TCC is controlled and modulated with a PWM control signal. There are several different modes for the TCC, it can operate in "slip" at up to 350 rpm difference between the turbine and the trans input shaft. The programming for that control strategy is to maximize the fuel economy calling for a closed TCC as much as possible.

Default You'd have to be very gentle on the throttle to avoild that slip...

Again, it's not a shift; it's just how the automatic tranny works. What it is telling you is that you really shouldn't be shifting so early (and higher rpm at low load doesn't burn that much more gas). I can make that happen in 5th too, if I slow down to below 1000rpm (around 30mph) and try to accelerate in a bit of a hurry.

Okay, good info, thanks Diag. Guess I'll have to learn to live with it.

Makes sense, although I don't feel I'm shifting early at 3000 rpm from 1st to 2nd. Also, staying in 2nd and then hitting the gas or accelerating out of a corner in second does not cause it to happen, which doesn't tie in to the RPM alone theory.

I don't feel Audi should have programmed this quirk into the Tip, for whatever reason. But, sounds like it's normal.

Thanks for the help, Akula.
