Tires will have 6/32 tread on fronts, 10/32 on rears. Any problems for the quattro system?

Default Tires will have 6/32 tread on fronts, 10/32 on rears. Any problems for the quattro system?

I might pick up a pair of used tires with 10/32 tread to go on the rear of my car, to go along with the pair I have up front with 6/32 tread. The tread compounds are similar. Others on this board have mentioned that a discrepancy in rolling diameter might mess up the quattro system. Does anyone else have an opinion on this? Seems to me the difference is neglibible.

Default You're just asking for trouble.

I don't know why you would want to cut corners on a 30k car with "used" tires at all. It's the simple cost of car ownership and $125+ a piece for new correct size/spec tires isn't asking for much in my opinion.

Default No problem, put the 10/32s up front for better steering, and they'll even up.

They are no worse than a set of tires that are ready to rotate.

Default it should be fine.. your overall diameter is still within 3% of eachother.

I have no idea where this magic 3% number came from tho...

however, the overall tire diameter is 25.4". 3% of that diameter so in theory you can have a difference of .75" in your tires?

.75 diameter diffence is a .375 radius difference. So you are allow 6/16s difference in tire tread.

Default Well, new tires would then have 12/32 tread (I think) which is a larger difference.

Or maybe it's not 12/32's, I'm not sure. But the front/rear discrepancy would be worse. Maybe that extra difference isn't a problem according to the guys above.

If it is, then I need to find tires with closer to 6/32's. Or buy a new set of four, which is a whole nother ballgame. Much more moolah. If you can even find P zero neros which are out of stock everywhere, at $150 a pop. plus, I hate trashing two perfectly good, though half worn, tires.

Hence my dilemna.

Default Do not mix brands or models.Dump the low tread ones & buy 2 new same ones to match w/the 10/32

Good tread in front. Only exception with mis-matched tires is if you take a PHYSICAL measurement of the diameter of both and if within 1-2% maybe ok. I would just get 2 new ones or better yet 4. Falken Ziex 512 is damn good and cheap at....

http://www.vulcantire.com</a
