Default Took car to local parts shop and had them scan it. Guess what turned up?? Good 'ol P1296 code.

This is part of my ongoing saga.

Funny thing is, anything I've heard or seen says P1296 means general Coolant system malfunction, but their printout stated "Manufacturer Contrl. Fuel Air Metering"

Is there software incorrect? The guy then proceeded to tell me he thought it was the MAF sensor and wanted me to buy a can of cleaner.

I wanted them to scan so dealer can't pull the 'different fault' b/s in an attempt to avoid their screw up from the first time. Thoughts? This could get nasty!

Default Have'm test the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor G62....

From my last post-

If Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT)
Sensor G62 fails, a defined substitute value
of 203°F (95°C) is used for coolant
temperature control and the first fan speed
stays activated.

The G62 sensor sensor also feeds the ECU a signal
which the ECU uses to alter fueling according to engine temp.

The G62 sensor has been improved upon since 2004.

It can be tested with a volt-meter. Changing one is a snap-<ul><li><a href="http://www.a4mods.com/index.php?page=webcontent/pages/ECTsensor.html">http://www.a4mods.com/index.php?page=webcontent/pages/ECTsensor.html</a</li></ul>

Default Green CTS and the neck that holds it both fail about now.

I had a hairline fracture letting out pink goo (coolant) and letting in air which goes to the TOP (and the sensor is top!) so it would cause inappropriate thermostat control since hot air does not register the same as hot coolant.

The ecu is closed loop. It requires the green cts to map the desired temperature the thermostat open/closes electronically.

The gauge is a dummy gauge on our cars, it only knows too cold, normal (195-225) or overheating. It isn't a real thermocouple gauge. You'd be shocked at how warm the car run when in cruise control mode. I think thats why they made it a dummy gauge.

Check for pink crustaceans man, they are coolant leaks, anytime coolant leaks air replaced it, and the green cts gets the air which doesn't measure as hot as the coolant. cauisng the system to trip out hardcore.

Default Indy shop replaced CTS at the back of engine. Dealership also "communicated" with the CTS at the

radiator and said all was good. I'm thinking air in the system too, and I'm pissed because I have a feeling my t-stat was perfectly good. This dealership is in for it big time!

Default Recommended tip for everyone......if you are paying for work done to your car, always tell them

that you want all the parts taken off your car. I usually supply a cardboard box and assorted plastic bags in the trunk.

If you'd done this, you would see if the T-stat needed to be changed.

Obviously, if its some big greasy part, I don't want it, but I always tell them I want to look at it after it is pulled off the car.

Hope you get your problem resolved to your satisfaction.

Default P1296 > VAG 17704

Instead of the OBD II DTC "P" code, if you have a dealers VAS 5051/5052 or a VAG-COM scan showing the VAG proprietry five digit DTC, the specific description is more detailed and accurate. If possible please post that VAG DTC.

EDIT: From the Bentley: The P1296/17704 DTC, "Cooling System Malfunction", refers to the Map Controlled Thermostat, F265, and/or to the engine temp sensor G62. Troubleshooting includes harness wiring to the ECU, and if all the above check out good, ECU replacement is suggested. A note in the text is "MIL=na" I think that means that if the DTC is set, it will not turn on the MIL/CEL.

It is possible that the DTC you found in memory is from before, if the Tech forgot to clear the DTC memory after repairs.

Default

That scaner software is wrong. P1296 is not fuel system, it is cooling.
