The camera takes the pic, and then it basically divides that specific image into whatever resolution you have the camera set at.
The colours, darkness or sharpness do not change with dif. resolutions.
Try it out and you'll see.

Personally I always take pictures at the max resolution of 2272 x 1704 anyway, because my computer's resolution is 1920 x 1200 (widescreen), so I need to be bigger than that to resize + crop to have a potential wallpaper. To me it makes more sense that if anything the higher resolution picture would be better I guess. I definitely remember hearing someone say it can get grainy at night though, but none the less I believe you more than the ficticious person I can't remember
