Total Noobie Q: What should the turbo sound like?

Just got an A4 1.8T Avant ('03), and it had a LOUD whine and low boost. Whine went away, and so did any boost at all. Replaced the turbo, and now it really has some jump! Which is nice. I can still hear the turbo spooling up (ascending whine), but it's not nearly as loud or obnoxious as before. I should be hearing this, right?

Its probably fine. My a4 avant has a loud turbo noise (whining) when turning off the car, takes like 5 to 7 seconds to stop.

I am afraid the turbo is going.

You can and should hear a little turbo whine upon start up while idling. Granted it is very subtle. I have to be in the garage with the windows down. Hvac is what you hear when you shut down.
