Default Trbo I.D.

I bought a 02 A4 two months ago and just recently it started smoking real bad. took the turbo off to find out that the impellers on the inside were able to wobble from side to side hitting. I am trying to find out what sort of thing i have going on here. On the front of the turbo it says,

EIIIUSA
K04-015
S/N TB009032027

Then in really small wrting i think it says www.eIIIusaautomotive.com?

I am trying to find out info on this set up as far as a kit to put in it or if i just need to buy a new one?

Thanks

Turbos are not something you can rebuild without special tools. Also, you appear to have a non stock turbo; K03's are standard fit for the A4. The K04 is a slightly larger capacity turbo, providing approximately the same boost levels, just at higher mass flows. Do you have any idea what sort of ECU tune you have? And no, I would have no idea to tell you how to figure this out except call the previous owner.

You have one of 2 options: 1) get hold of a shop that specializes in rebuilding semi-truck turbos. See if they would be willing to rebuild it or 2) buy a K04 turbo and simply have it replaced. I would be leary of buying any other turbo if you do not know what sort of ECU tuning you have. I know ECSTuning has them for sale.

Anyone else have any pearls of wisdom?

Default turbo

when i bought the car< it was on a lot, so no hopes of ever finding the guy that put it in. I did take it out only to find out ho was no pro! spliced o2 sensors and missing or plugged vac hoses. I did think when i bought it that everything was stock and that i was going to replace the turbo eventually. I was surprised to see the bigger turbo in there.

Does it have a cat or test pipe? My guess would be test pipe as there would be no other reason to mess with the o2 sensors.

Vaccum lines plugged? Hmmm.

Sounds like a bit of a hack has been modifying the car, potentially causing the second turbo to fail. I would recommend you do some research and figure out how to get everything mechanically plugged back together correctly and not just throw another turbo in.

it still does have the cat, was going to put in the test pipe. as far as everything else, yeah, it looks like some no talent hack had the car befor me. as i started pulling every thing out, most the bolts were loose and there were plugged off vac lines. also the upstream O2 sensor had been mangeled and two of the wires were spliced together for some reason.

Sounds like they used a universal 02 instead of a direct fit. You may want to trade that out, especially if the car is as poorly put together as you have mentioned.

We carry direct fit o2's for a fair price. If anything, it may be a good place to start with piecing together your car. Also, you may want to pickup a scan cable, do you have a laptop?

Sounds like you are on the right path. Good luck and let us know how things fair. I would also be curious about any impressions if you put a K04 and think you have the stock MAP.
