At first I thought it was the starter, but it seems when I crank the car cold the exhaust moves around somewhere and makes an uneasy creak noise as the engine turns over, also makes the same noise once when the engine is turned off

any tips?

The exhaust moves quite a bit from temp change, especially aftermarket ones (Factory ones have lots of bends to avoid big length changes, aftermarket ones don't)
