Default Re: You need to post those codes here....

I checked out the locator link you provided and I'm quite a way from anyone who has one... although I didn't even know that site existed. Interesting for sure!!

Spoke with the dealer... I'm driving the car back on Sunday to the dealer. Leave the keys in their drop box and they will be able to give it attention first thing Monday morning then. A family member will drive down with me, and drive me back, and then when the car is ready we'll drive down again, I can pick up the car and we'll drive back.

Sigh.

So you don't even use a key ring? Do you not use one in fear of it becoming magnetized and erasing the fob, or is it simply because you just don't use one?

We shouldn't be fearful of using a simple keyring... right?? In fact, Audi sells them on their Web site.

Are these car fobs THAT sensitive?

Default Well, I just don't like carrying a bunch of keys dangling but the magnetic thing..

could cause an issue too. If you google for "VAGCOM Locator" you should see some other sites with other members. (mabybe some near you)

I just paid about $130 for a key without the fob remote (I had my own). A whole key with remote should cost about $260 or so at the dealer.

Default KEY READER

I work at a dealership and this is a fairly common problem. The culpret is the key reader built into the ignition switch. It is basicly a coil that energizes the chip in the key and reads the immobilizer id from the chip. It is an easy fix and you dont need to go to the dealership for it.

Default Re: KEY READER

you need to order a new ignition switch from the dealership using your vin...they should be able to get you one that already matches the key for your car. next take the trim off of your steering column and unplug the electrical portion of your ignition switch. next look into the key end of the mechanical switch and you will see a small hole big enough for a paper clip, turn the key to the on position and by sticking a paper clip into the hole you should be able to pull the whole switch out of the column. installation is the same as removal and your keys dont need to be re-programmed

That fault code means that it is the key reader in the ignition switch that is bad
