Hey gang,
I have this problem that has happened a few times recently. I try and fill up and the fume sensor or whatever on the gas pump won't let me pump gas but like a drop at a time, and It sounds like a vacuum cleaner coming from the gas tank receptacle. A couple of things with my driving style that may contribute:
1) I drive it till it is almost empty. I have come to trust the range till empty after the gas light comes on, and I'll drive it till it says I have 5 or 10 miles till I'm out- I know bad habit, but I'm lazy and I haven't run it bone dry yet. Subsequently it usually takes 17.5 gallons of premium to fill it back up (FrontTrak)
2) It gets hot and humid down here (though not presently)
3) It happens shortly after engine startup
My guess is thatmy fuel cap is not venting? Or maybe i just elect to run it "too low" on fuel?
Any insight would be appreciated.
If I let the tank breathe with the cap off, it seems to be ok, just takes me 15 minutes to fill up and let the tank equalize and what not.

to assist in the venting process by just depressing flapper at the fuel filler neck and letting the vapor pressure release...
Usually after about a minute or so, you'll be back in business.

Modern gas tanks don't vent fumes as this is pollution. The vapor is condensed back into liquid form within the tank.
This is why a gas cap that isn't tightened will give a CEL. Gas tank can't pressurize itself.
Most gas pumps also have vapor recovery....as you pump fluid in, it sucks vapor out. The purpose is to reduce pollution.

I'm 45 and had a lot of cars. This occurred on my B6 about 6 months ago. I let it "breath" and it's been fine since. Unusual experience at first...

I posted a few days ago about this. By STFA I came up with a possible problem with the LDP (leak Detection pump)Search for Bob Petruska as he had the same deal but I couldn't find if he got it fixed.
I'm in to the Deale nextweek to get them to check.
