I topped up my engine oil today using standard, crappola, dino 5w30 Penzoil (less than 1/2 a quart @ 4500 miles).

here at the forum, it would appear that Audi did ship cars with synth oil earlier on in the '02 A4's production run. However, it appears at some later date, they reversed this practice and have reverted back to dino oil.
Since my car is one of the "newer" '02 A4's, I am guessing that I have dino oil. Either way, there is nothing wrong with mixing the two. And from what I understand, many (most?) Audi dealers use dino oil for the free maintenance oil changes.
I'll be switching to synth @ 10K (paying for the oil out of pocket if necessary) and every 5K, thereafter.
But for now, I'm topping up with dino and doing a dino oil change at my first 5K. Since dino oil does a better job at breaking in the engine, my thinking is that by 10K, all those metal shavings and the polishing will be done away with.
I live (or die) by April/verdegrrl's advice, so here's a link to a previous post of hers on this subject:

https://forums.audiworld.com/a4gen2/msgs/50150.phtml</a
