Default A very valid and interesting question about APR chips (I did a search)...

I have a tiptronic transmission. I would like to get a chip from APR, so I have decided to wait. I talked to a representative yesterday about torque and if it was too much for a tip tranny. She explained that their chips are for any transmission and the high amount of torque would not hurt my engine. She even used the word "guarantee" in that statement.

My question is: Through all of my searches and reading, I though a tip tranny should not handle more than 215-220 lbs/ft torque. This APR chip should have close to 250 or more torque.

I brought this up and she said that the ECU and the chip know that they are controling a tip tranny, meaning that it would not be harmful.

Does this make sense?

the CVT is the one you want to be careful with. a regular auto should hold it fine.

Default One tuner has blown up a tip transmission on one of their own test cars using 230 lbs-ft of torque.

A tip transmission is not something you wanna screw around with. Over $10,000 to replace. If it breaks, they don't fix it.

If it breaks, and you're chipped, you're out ten grand.

Default Ummmm... that definately won't work...

You can't drive a car that has blown it's tip transmission. If you can't drive the car around for a week with the stock ECU, the dealership can quickly tell that the ECU was just swapped in.

Default Some info. Keep in mind that torque limits are lower for AWD applications

because you don't usually have slip, which means driveline forces and shocks all get fed back to the trans, instead of the tires slipping.

300nm translates into 221lb ft of torque.

From the link.

"4.3 Increase of torque capacity

As well as weight reduction on certain transmissions, it is important to increase torque capacity to enable large series transmissions to be replaced by a smaller series. Decisive in this direction is knowledge about customer related duty cycles. Extensive measurements on public roads were evaluated. These showed that current traffic conditions do not allow long periods of full load running, enabling the test times of the high torque range to be significantly reduced. In comparison to the first layout design the 5 HP 19 and 5 HP 24 endures a 17% respectively 25% higher torque. (figure 4)."

My take on this ? Not designed for prolonged exposure to max torque levels.

A very good layman's ZF site
