I just learned from a Service Tech at my dealer that you can take off the lid on the current Air Box and it'll pretty much give you the sounds of a CAI. I don't know how loud it is or if it may in fact be detrimental to the use of your air box, but it's an easy thing to do if you want the sound without putting down extra money.
Golf users would do something similar by making a "swiss cheese" box (by drilling holes into the box) out of their air-boxes to create the sound.

The air is metered in a specific manner to create the correct amount of turbulance entering the maf. It's not something that should be routinely messed with. cheers! mike

Where you would flip over the top of the air cleaner on a carburetted car and then screw it down that way. That would give you a space around the entire circumference of the air cleaner while still giving the top a seal against the element. You'd get more air and a better intake sound that way. Worked like a charm on my '71 Toyota Corona sedan, made it sound almost like a Mustang II!
