Default Weird Sound when Quattro engages...

This happned a few weeks ago, but I havent thought of posting it till now.

It had snowed pretty well here in NC and I decided to take the car out and go "driving". Our Local ESPN radio is on AM channel 1590. I was driving around listening to Mike and Mike being an *** to someone. Now what was weird was that everytime i was doing someting stupid and the ESP would engage, or even when ESP was off, and I encountered wheelspin, I would get this weird noise on the radio.

It was synced exactly with what i would consider the workings of the quattro system. The car itself would not make any noise and it isnt damaged in any way that I am aware of.

Anyone else experiance this?

Default Quattro is always engaged (all four wheels are always being driven)

I believe the ESP is always "on" also, ie, sensors are calculating if the car is in control.

It could be the ESP actually kicking in and reducing power, braking certain wheels, but then you say when you shut it off the same things happen.

That sounds a little wierd. Also, it is believe that even when the ESP is turned "off" (by pushing the button) it is actually in effect still on, it just has higher tolerances I believe.

Don't know if that helps any, it could be the ESP engaging though? Haven't heard of anything like that though.

Default certain electrical devices emit frequencies heard through AM stations.... for example

if you have a graphing calculator, hold it near your AM radio antenna while on a station that you only hear static... press some buttons

i believe that if the esp was kicking in, it might have been emiting some frequency...

where in NC are you? im in wilmington

Default I'm in Greensboro

I am aware that all electrical devices generate frequencies, however what was weird to me was that when i turned ESP off it still created the buzz.

Guess its still doing its monitoring, however its just deciding after it find the slippage that it wont do any actions.

Default Re: Quattro is always engaged (all four wheels are always being driven)

That would be ADL...which is the poor man's traction control on the Audis. The torsen controls front-to-rear distribution and is purely a mechanical beast. But if you have significant wheelspeed differences from side-to-side on an axle, ADL will brake the faster wheel and ineffectively transfer power to the slower wheel. It sort of works, although a limited slip diff would be a big improvement in the slippery stuff.

Something's probably not grounded right, thus the interferance. My Jeep gets interference when I use the turn signals.
