Default What is the difference between QUAttro and 4X4?

Also, there was a discussion earlier that the ESP light won't come on..i had BMW and i have to turn off ASC in order to move forward in the snow otherwise power would be cut..
With Audi, is it necessary to turn off ESP?
Thanks

Default no need to turn of ESP

BMW's traction control is dead awful if you are stopped.

Quattro is full time AWD--do a search, lots of links about it.

Default long story..

4x4 is full time 4wd. 25% power to each wheel all the time. quattro is AWD (all wheel drive) power can be shifted, cut, and applied to differnt wheels baised on traction via 3 differentails. ESP will do exactly what it sez it will do, it will keep the car stable and in a striaght line (or matain a turn). The only reason you would need to take it off is if you are stuck in deep snow and need to spin the wheels (or if yah wana do some slides ) BMW's are mostly RWD, and RWD will spin alot in the snow, hence the need to turn ASC off so it doesnt cut the throtle out on you when your trying to move.

Might need to turn ESP off if your stuck in deep snow and need to spin out.

Default Actually I think AWD is full time whereas 4 X 4's generally are not. Lots of 4 X 4's don't have

don't have a front/back differential which is why vehicles like the Ford Explorer shouldn't use 4 wheel drive on dry pavement.

4x4 means 4 wheels X 4 wheels powered. AWD is all the time, but it can choose wheels, 4WD can not.

You realize that "Quattro" is merely the brand name only right?

Not exactly- Quattro implies a Torsen differential, which I think is unique to Audi at the moment

Default Nope-Jimax is right....

Quattro is Audi's trademark for all wheel drive- Torsen in all the A and S models, and Haldex in the TT. And Torsen center differentials are not unique to Audi - Toyota uses one in the '03 4Runner.
