Most 4x4s have a centre transfer case that is always locked so the front and rear diffs get 50% power each. The problem is that most of them have "open" diffs on the axles so the power goes to the wheel that turns the easiest. You can get stuck and have one front wheel and one rear wheel spinning as there is usually no traction control. The wheels that do have traction get no power.

And if you download the specifications on the Audi website, (using Adobe Acrobat) you'll find that the Quattro uses electric lockers. They are on the front and rear differentials. This is far superior to a 4x4 truck with open diffs or open in front with a clutch type limited slip posi in back.

4WD has front and rear diffs, no center. Furthermore, Quattro uses a torsen center and limited slip rear diffs. Quattro is the most advanced AWD system in production today. Period.
