Default Bugzy's right. To add, VW's 4Motion system is a viscous-coupling system that is...

driven electronically by software, as opposed to Quattro which is a mechanically driven system that uses worm gears to sense slippage and transfer torque. Hope it helps.

Default Just to clarify things. The AWD system in all Audis is called Quattro irregardless of which ...

System is used, Haldex or the Torsen. On the other hand and this is for marketing reasons only VAG decided to call the AWD systems 4Motion in its VW devision, again irregardless of the system used, Haldex or Torsen.

The following cars use the Haldex system;
the Golf, TT, A3/S3 and several other cars in Europe.
The following cars use the Torsen System;
the Passat, A4/S4, A6/S6/RS6 and the A8/S8 and many other cars under the VAG umbrella.

Default I think engine orientation is the deciding factor....

longitudinal= torsion
transverse = haldex

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Default One more slight clarification:

the Torsen® diff does not react to slippage, it actually reacts to differences in torque requirements. That is to say that the Torsen® differential is a torque multiplier. So, if it were in between two wheels, and one began to loose grip (notice, not slip, simply require less torque than its brother wheel) the Torsen® diff would send more torque to the wheel not slipping in a multiplicative way (so if the wheel losing grip required, say 10ft/lbs of torque, the Torsen® would send (10ft/lbs. X DT) where DT is the difference factor between the torque requirements of the two wheels). It gets really complicated, but I mention it because it is a superior system to and VC center diff system. The Haldex system, though, is rapidly becoming the performance de facto choice.

How is the 4x Motion system in VWs Touareg different from the Torsen system in the A4 and other VWs?

Default Nevermind. After reading Stash's post I guess the system in the Touareg is similar to the system in

The A4, A6, etc. I just remember reading that something was different about it, hence the name 4x motion instead of 4motion.
